Funding Opportunities
Laboratory Animals Limited provides funding a range of education and training initiatives in the field of laboratory animal science. Here are some examples:
Bursaries
Laboratory Animals Limited is accepting applications for bursaries. The process has changed from the previous system. Applications must be submitted before the deadlines of 17.00 on march 31st 2012 and 30th September 2012
All applications will be assessed and the bursaries will be given to the most high ranking.
The total fund for each call is 25,000GBP and the maximum grant will be 5,000GBP.
Applicants will be informed of the result on the 30th April
A new application form is being developed. Until this is available please use the current forms.

Individual scientists, who wish to attend training (courses) in laboratory animal science and welfare, can apply for bursaries from Laboratory Animals Limited. In the application a clear and concise statement on the need and relevance of this education for the work of the applicant is provided. Letters of recommendation from the head of the institute are necessary, as it is expected from the applicant that the knowledge and skills obtained will be passed on in their own countries and institutes afterwards. How this implementation is expected to take place needs to be clearly stated in the application and in the letter of recommendation by a senior official. Also the amount of money applied for and what is provided by the institute needs to be stated, as co-financing from the own institute is expected.
To apply for a bursary please see the 'How We Prioritise Funding' section. It is an advantage when an applicant intends to attend a course in laboratory animal science that has been accredited by FELASA.
Instead of providing individual bursaries, a number of bursaries can be provided to course organisers. Examples of these are the Masters course in Laboratory Animal Science in Barcelona, and the FRAME course on statistics and experimental design in the UK. In these cases, course participants need to direct their applications for funding to the course organisers.
For those researchers wishing to attend an international 2-week course in laboratory animal science, a summer school course is provided at Utrecht University: http://www.utrechtsummerschool.nl/index.php?type=courses&code=M2
PLEASE NOTE:
LAL are re launching its bursary programme
We will be making two calls in the year with deadlines of march and September. All applications will be ranked and announcements will be made in April and October of the successful applicants. We will launch the new programme and provide application forms late January early February.
Events & Conferences
Laboratory Animals Limited can also cover travel expenses of international experts in laboratory animal science to speak at conferences. If a conference organisation lacks the funds to finance travel costs of international speakers that have a specific expertise relevant for the topic of the conference, an application for funding can be sent to LAL. If the funding application is successful, the conference organisers are requested to display the LAL logo at the particular lecture/session.
It is also possible to apply for funding for producing conference proceedings, such as those of FELASA symposia.
LAL can also provide assistance for workshops in relevant topics. Recently, support has been provided to a Spanish workshop on cryopreservation techniques.
General Funding
We provide funding for many initiatives aimed at improving education and training in laboratory animal science. In many instances, these initiatives are developed in conjunction with those Laboratory Animal Science Associations that have adopted "Laboratory Animals" as their official journal (currently GV-SOLAS, ILAF, LASA, NVP, SECAL, SPCAL and SGV.)
Examples of initiatives that have previously received funding are:
- Translation of FELASA working Group reports in French, Russian and Spanish
- Production of a handbook on genetic modification procedures in Spanish
